"I would like to report on the 1st Annual Friends' Weekend...."

Friends of Chief and Calla wrapped up their first ever gathering on the last weekend of Summer at Green Cove.  The verdict?  Let’s do this again!   Only let’s make it THREE DAYS.  So next year the 2nd annual Friends of Chief and Calla will take place on Labor Day weekend.  Mark your calendars!

The purpose of Friends Weekend?  One is to raise money to support the Frank and Calla Bell Foundation.  Another is to raise our own spirits and rekindle our love of camp through getting out and paddling, riding, walking, climbing, singing and spending time together.

WE HAD FUN!  Eating can be a fun activity too and Kirk the Mondamin Culinary Magician spoiled us with wonderful selections including Salmon, Prime Rib, lox, and lots of other good things I’m not supposed to eat because of my high cholesterol.

If your spouse is not a camp human, have no fear.  You can bring them and they will have an incredible time.  Scott Reed’s wife Annette and daughter Lilla took a riding lesson from Nancy and then did a back 40 walk with me in search of Icicle Falls.  Martha’s husband Chris climbed and then accompanied son Alexander on a search for a sea kayak.

Poppy Decunto’s husband Mario had never been camper or counselor but after Maestro Gordon Grant’s Cram Course in Paddling, sandwiched between a great breakfast and lunch, off they went on the Friends Down Green Paddling Extravaganza.

I won’t list all of the paddlers here but the age range was pretty amazing.  It included tiny Dockendorfs and Bells along with grizzled veterans Martha Altvater and Kathryn Overstreet.

A real treat Saturday night was the visit of Will Leverette, Chief’s grandson, who has just written a book - his memoir of growing up amid paddling legends.  His slide show consisted of numerous canoeing photos by Calla and really underscored the rich history which we are all fortunate to be a part of.   David Bell brought many old camp pictures he’s been cataloging; some showed camp in the 20’s and there were even a few of the Mondamin terrain before the lake was being built.

My own tense moment came when I had trouble getting the fire, which I had prepared earlier, to light.  My mountaineering skills were on the line and thanks to Martha’s husband Chris, his lighter and several sheets of paper, we eventually had flame.  I received no assistance or sympathy from the audience, who were singing “Come On Gary, Light My Fire.”

Hanging out on the Green Cove Deck Saturday night with Scott and Day playing music on guitar and banjo sounded pretty darn good.  It was a cool crisp evening and the background music set the tone as newcomers and old timers shared memories.  Joe Clarke whose first year at camp was 40 years ago, had never met my wife Barbara.  His last year was 1973.  Since they both had been riding instructors they discovered one thing they had in common was the joy of riding Pete the one-eyed Welsh pony.  That was the kind of magic that just happened.

"I recomend this trip to anyone who can get on it..."
We want you to plan on joining us next Labor Day Weekend.  Come have fun with us and let’s raise some money in the process.   We’ll offer paddling as well as a variety of activities that make the weekend truly family friendly.  RECYCLE YOUR CAMP MEMORIES!   Great location, excellent activites and unforgettable friends.  Now all we need is YOU.
